B/L3 Swimming

I have used right-sided breathing every stroke since neck surgery 10 years ago. Interested in the free time-savings described by KP, I used bilateral breathing every 3 strokes (B/L3) today. I tried to relax and emphasize an even and complete expiration. I was clearly more uncomfortable, although seemed to be able to maintain my splits. Why should I continue this discomfort?
A. Evens and lengthens the stroke and avoids overuse injuries
B. Allows emphasis of the relaxation of respiratory muscles during expiratory phase.
C. Lengthening the expiratory phase increases tidal volume and permits more complete transfer of CO2 {Sounds good, but physiologically this usually occurs through increased respiratory rate)
Any thoughts?
