Good day from Idaho. I landed in Spokane yesterdayand eventually made my way down to Coeur d'lene. This is a beautiful venue and reminds me a lot of Penticton and IMC. First order of business was to assemble my bike and be sure that all parts were working. Check. Next, I got up early and met Christine Fletcher down at the lake for an early swim. We got there by 6:30am and were in the water by 6:45am. We were joined by one other athlete. As advertised, it was a cold swim, but not impossible. Very much like the lake swim at Worlds Toughest HIM back in 2003; about 54F. Fresh water feels colder than salt water at the same temps due to salt content so this was cold. Definite ice cream headache type stuff but doable.
After the swim we saddled up and rode most of one loop of the two loop run course with some steady efforts inserted in parts of the 45min ride. CF had a run off and we separated as I headed home for 6 eggs and a half a chicken. About 2hrs later we met, registered up and drove the bike course. It is a beautiful course with reasonably good rodes. Not glassy smooth but smoother than east county San Diego roads and smooth compared to New Zealand. I was a bit suprised by the meaty rollers that cover the middle portion of the two loop course. It looks to be a cross between Wisconsin and Canada. Not as long of climbs as IMC and slightly fewer rollers than IMWisc. Athletes who struggle to keep their wits about them on loop 1 will pay for mistakes made when riding over loop 2. It should be breezy as well as the afternoon temps will be in the low 80s.
I'm told Elites go off at 6:25am Sunday so that's when Christine and I hit the water tomorrow. I hope Julie D. and some others have a chance to join us. I chatted with Albert Boyce and Mark P. at registration and with Golden Bear Ken just prior to registering. Lots of familiar faces out here. My fridge is now stocked like home and the rest of the house is similarly comfortable, albeit quiet relative to the crew we had at my house last week for my daughter's high school graduation. Three cheers to the Purcell women!
See Yaaa ...
