San Diego winter arrives

Periodically I am reminded that San Diego is a desert. Here it is well into December and yesterday we had 40-60mph wind gusts blowing off shore. It was 70 degrees warm and wild. So many branches and tree limbs were falling along the eucalyptus lined streets I was looking upward to steer clear. I rode at what felt like a steep angle leaning into a crosswind in some directions with the wind so loud I couldn't hear my iPOD. In another direction I was riding 2-3 gears harder than normal going up hill because I was being lifted by a tailwind in complete silence. Felt like I had super-fitness! The last option was dead into a head wind, crawling with low cadence on the flats. It was a fun change of pace and enjoyable because we had sunshine. The flip side to day time winter Santa Anas are the early mornings. Got up today at 4:30am to swim. I was on the wet pool deck at 5:15 in a speedo and it was 37 degrees. Getting to the pool I'm in shorts, a t-shirt and flip flops. That's how we do it in southtown. We stay dressed as minimalist to show our solidarity to those elsewhere in the rain and/or snow!
