How much rest?

My roommates made the brilliant observation that I am too wound up when I sleep, wake up too early to run to the pool, get pooped, sleep before the evening session and the last session ends around 9pm.
Ive changed things to not wake up before 7am (as I have to adjust to when the house sleeps and it works well for me) and in bed by 11. Thats 8 hours.. give or take.
What is active recovery or just plain recovery? How much rest between sessions (for me 3-4 hours works fine and my brain also ocassionally works in that time) as of late, I have been thinking that I need to rest more.
