Knee Pain While Cycling

The last two times I've cycled I've felt pain in my right knee, below and to the right (on the outside) of the kneecap. Sometimes it's just achy and other times it's a sharp shooting pain. The pain is most noticeable when in a big gear or going up hills; soft-pedaling or riding in the small-chain ring is tolerable. Walking and running doesn't hurt at all; feels totally fine.
Does this sound like patellar tendonitis? That's what I've self-diagnosed it as via webmd.com and mayoclinic.com. If so, do you have any experience/advice on treatment?
I'm going to take it easy and ice and stretch. I might also look into one of those patella straps to put below the kneecap. I also contacted my primary care doctor to get an evaluation or referral with a sports med physician and am waiting to hear back from him.
In hindsight I did a few dumb things:
- upped the volume AND intensity too much at the same time (5hr brick, 2.5hr hard brick, and 2hr run done in a six-day span recently)
- haven't been as thorough as I should with stretching
- have let strength training fall by the wayside in favor of endurance training
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as IM Wisconsin is just 23 days away. I just want to get to the starting line healthy and not in pain!
Thanks in advance,
P.S. I hope it's okay for me to post this here, as perhaps some other forum readers doing IM Wisconsin or other late season IM's are feeling the same thing or can learn from it!
